Artist Statement

We now live in a digital world where our minds can be separated from the beauty that surrounds us. I am a contemporary figurative painter who disrupts that separation by bringing back one of the oldest and prestigious way of painting and by producing tangible products. I paint from life mostly and my inspiration comes from real people that are on the move. I live in New York City where I have access to these people: young, old, big, small--and most importantly--people from all around the world. New York City is my movable studio. What started as simple line drawings years ago has matured into elaborate, figurative oil paintings.

My recent works focus on figurative and portrait paintings using traditional or contemporary oil painting techniques. When models pose for multiple long sessions, I build up my paintings using multiple layers of paint. As I see the subject for extended duration of time, shapes and colors shift and I capture those movements in my work. Often times, the outcome of the painting is based on documenting delicate, beautiful, and lost movements from time past and time present.

I have also executed other type of paintings such as painting of lighthouses and houses by the sea, but my intention, inspiration, and drive remains the same. The major difference is that even when I am not painting people, I imagine that whatever I am painting are people, too. That way, I give each subject the highest respect for being with me.

If you were to see me painting, you would see how much I love to paint. It is incredible that at the end of it all, there are physical paintings on a variety of surfaces that I paint on these days: linen, aluminum, cotton, wood, people, and--because I am environmentally conscious--cut up shipping boxes. Before starting any project, I give sufficient time to ensure that the end product will be pleasing to the eye when hung in a living space. I strive to make my work to be highly decorative or inviting.

While we are connected to one another using highly advanced communication tools, we often find ourselves physically alone. My figurative and portrait paintings are intended to fill that void as a reminder that the most important people are the ones that are in front of us.

Je lives and works in New York City. A trained figurative painter and draftsman, Je began showcasing his work in 2019.

Initially a self-taught painter, Je had produced paintings mostly from his imagination. As a draftsman, Je has drawn portraits through venues that provide the opportunity to draw from live models. In the recent years, Je has accelerated his craft by learning from gifted artists and teachers: Costa Vavagiakis, Max Ginsberg, and Sharon Sprung. Je's currently studying under Janet A. Cook.

His latest drawings are posted on instagram. If you have enjoyed browsing my work, please "follow" @JeSoundkeepers If you would like to inquire about his work, please complete this contact form. Thank you!
